In 2005, Constance Valis Hill had a dream. In it, the late, great Gregory Hines was dancing, and Hill, ever the academic, was frantically trying to write down all his steps on paper. He urged her not to. “Don’t write, just look at the steps—remember,” Hines said, before tossing her a book in which all of his moves had been documented. To Hill, the dream symbolized the importance of chronicling tap-dance history; five years later, she’s done just that. Her new book, “Tap Dancing America: A Cultural History,” charts the “three-hundred-year musical and social exchange” that created this distinctly American art form. |
